Bike Walk Macon is proud to offer free biking and pedestrian safety courses. We host workshops on bicycle skills, bicycle maintenance, and various other bicycle issues. Our classes seek to grow the number of Maconites biking and walking through education, raising awareness, and cultivating bicycle and pedestrian leaders.

Check out our free safety classes hosted by certified bicycle instructors and tailored to riders of all skill levels. You can also request a customized group course or one-on-one lesson by filling out the submission form at the bottom of the page.


NIGHT CYCLING 101

Want to learn how to safely cycle at night? Join Bike Walk Macon for Night Cycling 101 where you’ll learn the best practices for riding at night, how to see and be seen, and how to be a confident cyclist when the sun goes down. We’ll implement these techniques together with a group night ride through Downtown Macon after the lesson.

This class is FREE to attend for adults 18 and up, but please register at nightcycling0227.eventbrite.com to help us prepare. The class will begin at 6:00 PM at the Bike Walk Macon Office at 830 High Street and last for about 2 hours. We'll have FREE Bike Walk Macon lights, snacks, and water. Be sure to bring your helmet!

Bike Walk Macon has a limited supply of bicycles for use, though we recommend bringing your own since it is best to learn to ride on the bike you will be using most. Email kaylee@bikewalkmacon.com to borrow a bike.


Fundamentals of Bicycling

Free two-part course on the Fundamentals of Bicycling designed to build on your current bicycling knowledge and boost your confidence and safety on the road.

Part 1: In our first class, we will cover the essentials. Learn the correct way to power start, shift gears, and scan your environment while pedaling. We'll also cover bicycling basics, including the rules of the road, performing an ABC Quick check, and the proper way to fit your bike and helmet.

Part 2: The second class will build on your newfound skills. We'll explore general bike safety, effective communication with fellow commuters, utilizing dedicated bike infrastructure, and reviewing both state and local laws. This course aims to make you a predictable, visible, and confident cyclist.


Back on the Bike

Back on the Bike is a beginner's bicycling course for adults. This class is for novice bicyclists or for those who may have tried riding a bike a few times, but are not comfortable balancing, starting and stopping, shifting gears, and scanning the environment while pedaling. Students will learn bicycling basics including rules of the road, ABC Quick check, and how to properly fit your bike and helmet. As well as bike handling which includes balancing, pedaling, and steering control along with teaching several emergency hazard avoidance techniques.

Students will finish the class with the skills to advance to "Urban Confidence".

Urban Confidence is an intermediate bicycling course for adults. This class will help you improve your experience and safety so you can pedal our city’s streets. We'll cover general bike safety, communicating with other commuters, using dedicated bike infrastructure, and reviewing state and local laws. The class will help students be predictable, visible, and confident while biking in an urban environment.

Bike Walk Macon is pleased to announce it has received a grant from the Governor’s  Office of Highway Safety (GOHS).
This grant will help finance efforts to develop and execute educational programs that expand and promote bicycle and pedestrian safety to reduce the number of pedestrian and bicycle fatalities, injuries, and crash rates in Macon-Bibb County, Georgia.
