May is Macon Bike Walk Month!

Bike Walk Macon celebrates Macon Bike Walk Month each year by hosting several free events celebrating biking and walking. Not only is choosing to bicycle or walk better for the environment, but it is also better for you! This month we have several events designed to get you out into the community and moving.

Open STreets Macon: Houston Avenue

Bring your friends and family, and share in the experience of enjoying our city streets as public space!

Open Streets Macon is back on Houston Avenue! Come join us on Sunday, May 3, from 2 PM to 5 PM, where Houston Avenue will transform into a vibrant community space from Newberg Avenue to Rocky Creek Road. The street will be closed to motorized traffic. No registration is required, and Open Streets Macon is completely FREE and open to everyone.

Organized by Bike Walk Macon with Macon-Bibb County's District 2 Community Family and Commissioner Paul Bronson - Open Streets is a car-free celebration of public space; bringing people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds together to walk, skate, bike, play, and re-imagine how we use our public streets.

National Bike & Roll to School Day

Celebrate the joy of active commuting while building a sense of community and school spirit. The event brings attention to the importance of creating safe routes to school. For more information on how to get involved, check out www.walkbiketoschool.org.

Bibb county AARP Age-Friendly Celebration

Macon-Bibb County celebrates its status as the first community in the nation to be designated an Age-Friendly City by AARP and the World Health Organization. The celebration features community resources, games, and entertainment. More details to follow.


MAY 14 | 6:00 - 8:00 PM

Macon MurAL Cruise

Grab your bike and join us for the Macon Mural Cruise on Thursday, May 14. We’ll ride through the city, stop by some of Macon’s best murals and creative spots, and soak up an evening full of color, music, and good vibes.

Part bike ride, part art crawl - this is all about getting outside, exploring the city, and celebrating the creativity that makes Macon special.

Ride Details:
Macon Bike Party is a free, slow-paced bicycle ride through Macon’s neighborhoods with music, friends, and fun. All ages and skills welcome - costumes and bike decor encouraged. It’s not a race, it’s a party on 2 wheels!

  • When and Where: Bike Walk Macon office (830 High Street) at 6:00 PM. Before the ride, we’ll share city-cycling safety tips. Wheels are down at 6:15 PM and ends at Fall Line Brewing Co (567 Plum St) by 8:00 pm.

  • Riders are welcome to join or depart the group at any point. All ages are welcome.

  • A complete route map will be available on the Facebook event page 24 hours before the ride.

  • Remember to bring a helmet.

  • We'll have FREE Bike Walk Macon lights, snacks, and water.

More Fun:
Fall Line Brewing Co. is our official after-party spot, where riders can gather and socialize after the ride. Plus, Bike Party attendees get a 10% discount on their drinks!

Ride Ready: Family Bike Basics

Ready to help your family feel confident riding bikes together?

Join Bike Walk Macon at Amerson River Park for a free Family Ride Ready class designed for kids who already know how to ride a bike and are ready to practice in a safe, real-world environment.

Class Details:
The class will begin at the Playground Pavilion parking lot.

Amerson is the perfect classroom - with wide paths, very low traffic roads, and plenty of space to ride at a comfortable pace away from cars.

During this class, families will learn and practice:

  • The ABC Quick Check to make sure bikes are safe before every ride

  • Proper helmet fit and safety, using bike lights

  • Basic road and path safety

  • How to ride predictably and confidently around others

  • Tips for riding together as a family in parks and on neighborhood streets

After learning the basics, participants will take a guided, low-pace ride through the park to put their new skills into action.

This class is free to attend and will be offered on March 21, April 11, and May 16. Each rider will receive a helmet, rechargeable bike lights, and bike safety education materials while supplies last.

This class is not for brand-new riders. Children should already be able to pedal, steer, and stop on their own.

Public Spaces Walk with Margaret Peth, UDA

Join Bike Walk Macon for a Walk ‘n’ Talk! This monthly walking series is an opportunity to connect and chat while getting some fresh air and gentle exercise.

LOCATION: Third Street Park (near Bibb Theatre) | May 19 | 6:00 PM
ABOUT: Walk with us through Downtown as we check out some of Macon’s newest and upcoming public spaces. Along the way, Margaret Peth with the Urban Development Authority and Reimaging the Civic Commons will share the vision behind these projects and highlight the pedestrian and bike improvements helping create a more connected Macon.

Additional Details
This one-hour, easy-pace group walk meets on the third Tuesday of each month (March to June and September to December) at 6:00 PM. Each month, we’ll feature a guest guide and a special topic to discuss as we explore the streets of Macon.

Participants should be able to walk 3 miles non-stop. Wear appropriate fitness gear and bring water. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed.

Before each walk, we’ll do some light stretching as Bike Walk Macon’s Education Instructor shares pedestrian safety information and smart walking tips.

Macon CAR FREE DAY

Join the movement to go car-free in Macon on May 29th!
Whether you're walking, biking, riding the bus, carpooling, or working from home, your decision to leave the car behind helps reduce traffic, lower emissions, and save money - all while seeing Macon from a new perspective.

CAR FREE DAY MEETUPS

Macon Bagels | 8:30 TO 9:30 AM

In celebration of Macon Car Free Day, we’re hosting a breakfast meetup at Macon Bagels located at 470 Third Street. Drop in anytime between 8:30 to 9:30 am and grab a breakfast sandwich, drink a quick cup of joe, or just mingle with fellow commuters. Very casual, wear whatever you commute in. Car Free Day pledgers get a free hot or iced coffee!

Margaritas in Mercer Village | 11:40 AM TO 1:30 PM

Hop on the bus with Bike Walk Macon for a lunch outing! We’ve got 20 free bus passes!
Meet at Transfer Station (200 Cherry St) at 11:40 AM to ride together to Margaritas in Mercer Village - return by 1:30 PM. Please note that our arrival time may vary, and we may arrive earlier depending on the duration of the meal.


Fall Line Happy Hour | 5 TO 7 PM

Let’s celebrate everything we’ve achieved during Bike Walk Month and Car Free Day! Keep the momentum going - bike or walk to Fall Line Brewing Co. (567 Plum St) to connect with fellow commuters and advocates who care about active transportation and creating safer, more accessible streets for all. We’re hanging out from 5 to 7 PM on Car Free Day.

Re-Cycle Macon is a program Centenary Community Ministries (CCMI) founded in partnership with Bike Tech and Bike Walk Macon to get bicycles to under-resourced individuals in Macon lacking dependable transportation.

Bikes in repairable shape may be dropped off at Re-cycle Macon, 1235 Ash St., Macon, GA 31201.

Casual, relaxed weekly bike ride open to riders looking for a fun, social ride! The route covers about 10-15 miles ending at Macon Bagels. May not be suitable for riders under 12 years old. Helmets are required for all riders.

Meet at the shop around 8:00 AM to get ready. Wheels down at 8:15 AM sharp! Only happens on sunny Saturdays—no ride if it’s raining!
