SAFE STREETS FOR ALL MACONITES

As advocates for safe streets, it is our responsibility to speak out and acknowledge that systemic racism exists in our transportation system.

In Macon-Bibb County, we know that one in three Maconites do not have a driver’s license according to our Long Range Transportation Plan. This means that equitable access to safe biking and walking infrastructure is necessary for all neighborhoods. Unfortunately, there are still obvious disparities in access to safe, connected infrastructure for low-income neighborhoods and Black communities. We want to be a part of addressing these inequities on our streets, speaking out against them, and working to change them.

We are committed to being an anti-racist organization. We are committed to taking the time to listen and learn during this time. And, we’re committed to taking action and doing the work, not just speaking about it. We will work to create and share more actionable steps about our re-commitment to the fight for safe streets for all in the upcoming weeks.

Will you join us in the fight for safe streets for all Maconites, not just for some Maconites? Transportation equity cannot exist without social justice. Help us create a Macon that elevates the people who have been left out of transportation decision-making processes or dramatically impacted through transportation projects for far too long.

We ask you to hold us accountable as we do the work to create truly safe streets. This is an ongoing conversation, and we want to hear from you. Please reach out to me at rachel@bikewalkmacon.com with feedback, questions, and thoughts you have about how we can be doing more.

With love,
